About Salvatore Pepe – Chef

Salvatore Pepe was born in Calabria, southern Italy and was nurtured by the fresh produce and distinctive flavours of the local cuisine. As a teenager he moved to Florence and began his professional journey, first as a waiter but the call of the kitchen was irresistible and he began his apprenticeship at one of the areas most respected traditional restaurants. After almost a decade preparing the dishes of the Chianti, he packed his bags for Australia, working for some of the leading restaurants in Sydney before moving to Adelaide and ultimately to his own restaurant, Cibo, which he opened with three local partners in 1996.

Cibo expanded to include a chain of Italian Espresso bars which were instrumental in promoting a new coffee culture in Adelaide.

Salvatore has led intimate guided culinary tours of Italy for many years, published a cookbook of his favourite recipes (Cibo, 2005) and each year returns to Italy to seek inspiration and new flavours to bring home to Adelaide.

In March 2016 he opened his own restaurant, Pepe Cucina, Pepe at Burnside Village.

Although Salvatore has worked at the highest level and perfected many techniques in the kitchen, he remains true to his conviction that good Italian food is all about flavour and this can only be found in the best and freshest produce.
